Caitlin Clark is a dynamo, attracting thousands to the game of basketball. This Iowa Hawkeye grew up in Des Moines, without girls’ basketball. As an eighth grader, Clark competed with boys. But they had to recruit older, stronger boys to guard her. They rarely could.

Recently, Clark broke the NCAA Women’s All-Time points record. Every Hawkeye road game sells out. And the University of Iowa hoops revenue went from $573k in 2021 to $3.8 million in 2023. Clark’s influence on young girls signals a bright future for women’s hoops.

Clark has been criticized for her swagger. She celebrates good shots, taunts other players, and revels in showmanship. Steph Curry, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant have never received similar criticism.

Don’t hide the pride of your accomplishments. Mastering a craft, art, or science takes years of sweat and discipline. Owning your skills is one of the most persuasive tools for a speaker. Pride must be reined in, but like Clark, share the joy of your achievements.
