Speaking with Emotion

10 Jul Speaking with Emotion

At a recent workshop, a participant was overcome with emotion when speaking about her father and how they started working together. She apologized. Yet the authenticity she displayed made her content come alive and captured the attention of everyone in the room.

When we have the courage to speak about topics close to our hearts, or that make us feel vulnerable, tears can come. Let them. A catch in the throat, tears, and even crying doesn’t diminish our strength. However, you need to soldier on and not exhibit so much emotion that you cannot continue, the audience feels sorry for you, or you forget your intention.

If you are concerned that you will cry when addressing an audience, rehearse your content until it is no longer quite so raw. And then go for it.
