26 Apr SING OUT
We love being tourists in our own hometown. At Santa Fe’s Wheelwright Museum, we learned about the hatalii, or Navajo singers. They aren’t entertainers; they’re medicine men who sing or chant to restore the health and balance of tribal members. Consider them doctors of the spirit.
We recalled that when we sang as kids, we favored the songs that made us happy and laugh. Years later, David performed Latin requiems in concert choirs, Elizabethan madrigals and musicals. The glow he felt after a performance of Jesus Christ Superstar was profound.
Singing, even without a hataalii, can do the same for you. Before a meeting or presentation, find a quiet place and sing a tune, one that makes you feel good. At the very least, it will warm up your voice and increase your musical range. Speaker anxiety takes you off your game and out of balance. Singing a familiar tune could be just the thing to reduce anxiety and lighten your spirit.
