19 Jul BE THE ORANGE JACKET
Years ago, we were skiing in Santa Fe. A snowstorm made it difficult for Deborah to follow David (the more experienced skier) down the mountain. Instead, she saw an advanced skier in an orange jacket and followed him. She took that experience and made orange jacket the visual cornerstone of her presentation theme, or easily repeatable phrase.
A couple months later, when Deborah spoke to professional women at CUNA Mutual she began with “I had fear, but saw the orange jacket and followed it.”
And like Mozart and Beethoven she employed variations on a theme throughout her presentation. So, Deborah encouraged the less seasoned professionals in the audience to find their own orange jacket. And she paid it off by closing with “Later in your career, I encourage you to become the orange jacket. There’s nothing better for others finding their way in tough situations, especially when they are exacerbated by doubt.”
Her theme of the orange jacket was visual, inspiring, and simple. Develop a clear and unique theme for your next presentation. The more creative and unexpected your theme, the more your entire content will be remembered.
