12 Jan Popcorn Actress
At the recent Golden Globe Awards, an actress who has been in show business for 50 years won Best Actress for her role in The Substance. Her acceptance speech was widely touted as the highlight of the evening.
Demi Moore (*) began with a story about a producer who years ago told her that she was a popcorn actress, or one whose films could only make money but were not important. For a long time, Moore allowed herself to believe that she’d never be acknowledged as a serious actress.
We’ve all received a version of that producer’s comment, no matter what profession we’re in. We’ll bet you can quote it, even though it may have happened decades ago.
After a dismissive review of his stage performance, David learned to rely on his own critical acumen and never again read another review, whether laudatory or negative.
When you receive negative comments after a presentation or pitch that you don’t agree with, consider the source and honor what you thought of your work. Because if you allow opinions to sway you, it can be a heavy emotional burden to carry. Take critiques only from those you trust. You did the work, you were there facing that audience, and you know best.
(*) Note: We coached Moore for a fundraising speech representing her non-profit THORN where she wowed her audience. Moore is humble, compassionate and a true humanitarian.
