In Oklahoma City last week, we trained a group of interns attached to the Oil and Gas Industry. Like many of our clients, these young engineers, attorneys, CPA’s and scientists were challenged to construct client anecdotes or case studies.
The truth is, no one was born a great storyteller. The standouts understand that their business example should resemble the best action novels.
First, every story needs a conflict to solve, so begin by focusing on an obstacle. Then relate a solution which describes your process or how you operate, especially under stress. Drive the narrative to an inevitable climax. The coda concludes the tale and delivers a satisfying resolution.
One simple message propels your story forward. Remember to keep elements simple and clear, without too many characters or themes. Short sentences maintain tension. Dialogue brings your story and characters to life
Before relating an example, take yourself back to when the experience occurred– rather than reporting on the event. This will ensure you remember colorful details and keep the description fresh. You can deliver an action-packed story in 2-3 minutes, whatever your field of endeavor. Write on.
