We spent last weekend near Cortez, Colorado. The area called Canyons of the Ancients contains the highest concentration of previously inhabited Native sites in the U.S. The Puebloan (or Anasazi) people thrived there in the 10^th through the 12^th centuries and were determined to leave behind their history.

Because they did not have a written language, the Anasazi composed pictorial stories. These petroglyphs were inscribed into soft stone, through a coating of manganese (desert varnish) using sharp rocks or yucca. Interpretations vary, but these petroglyphs tell of successful hunts, conquering enemies, human figures and fanciful creatures thought to be spirits or aliens. Chiseled portraits in rock reminded us of decorating a landing with family photos.
