We’ve received a number of calls from clients who envision becoming a conference or TED speaker. These talented individuals deserve support to realize their dreams. We also know that it takes a unique perspective, training, and persistence to build a new career as keynote speakers. But if you think you can’t manage it, you’d be wrong.
Gina Osborn (photo) was an FBI Special Agent who trained with us. Retirement was approaching, so Osborn took a pragmatic approach to building her speaking business and leveraging her experience in the FBI. Now, she’s an internationally acclaimed motivational speaker and podcast host. Osborn masterfully uses social media to promote her accomplishments. But it didn’t come quickly, or without consistent efforts.
Osborn is not our only client to achieve success as a keynote speaker. We coached Laurie MacCaskill who survived pancreatic cancer. On her website, she lists herself as Cancer Coach and Professional Speaker. MacCaskill speaks to Congress, Healthcare Professionals, Professional Organizations and Cancer Patients.
We also trained ten-year-old Caitlyn Ryan who suffered from juvenile arthritis. Barely able to reach the lectern, she spoke at an Arthritis Foundation event. Instead of a canned speech, Ryan shared how she needed hip replacements and was in and out of hospitals. When she talked about attending a special camp and feeling “normal and like a kid again” she received a standing ovation, as well as increased funding to the organization.
Each week, Deborah conducts one-on-one virtual sessions for clients who want to step out on bigger stages. She recommends choosing an idea or project that you are passionate about. Develop a unique perspective. Write up a brief description that includes audience take-a-ways, as well as a catchy title. Collect testimonials. Record brief sample videos. And eventually make a resume of where you’ve spoken, the client who brought you in, and audience.
Then reach out to event producers and planners for a conference in your industry, knowing that it could take up to a year to book a keynote or breakout session. When you’re ready, set up a TedX Talk. The world needs more compelling speakers. Lead the way.
