Amy Tan’s latest book, The Backyard Bird Chronicles tells how she spent up to twelve hours a day observing and sketching birds. This prompted us to take a closer look at the birds on our property. We saw that when perched on a branch and strong winds blow, birds maintain their balance. Turns out, birds have an LSO, or lumbosacral organ in their pelvis. It functions much like a gimbal on boats or cameras, keeping what is attached to the gimbal level and upright.

Many people experiencing stage fright share they feel “light-headed”, or that they might “float away.” What if humans had an LSO? Maybe we do. Our center of gravity is right below our belly button and is the balance point where our entire body mass is concentrated. Yoga teachers and actors speak of “centering yourself” or “finding your center” for better performance.

When you have an important presentation, activate your inner gimbal by standing in a neutral position and breathing into your navel. Then bend your knees slightly and widen your stance. (This is what Sumo wrestlers do.) Visualize being grounded. You will feel stronger and connected to the earth.
