20 Apr Desert Bloom
In the high desert of New Mexico, spring is finally making an appearance. While other parts of the country are awash in blooms, at 7,000 ft, not so much. This makes new blossoms on our trees, bushes and plants more dramatic and pleasing. Colorful flowers are the way many of us celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or empathize over a loss. Flowers delight the eye and cheer us up.
Consider your content for an upcoming presentation. The material may resemble our winter desert, unexciting in browns and greens. Necessary, but without a variety of hues. It’s your job to infuse color to engage your audience and make them pay attention. Examples:
Similes:
The stock market cratered like a meteorite without a compass.
This program is like milking your cash cow and watching cream rise to the top.
His argument cracked like a frozen lake in the spring sun.
Onboarding new hires is like providing a ticket on the fast train.
Metaphors:
The vermilion cliffs were a watercolor of frozen time.
Your portfolio is an 800-pound gorilla—dangerous and powerful.
To scientists, metaphors and similes are lit matches in an ammunition dump.
