TIP OF THE WEEK: COMIC BLUEPRINT

The 2023 Golden Globe Awards were like watching paint dry. Winners came to the stage, mumbled about how they were “stunned,” “didn’t expect this…” or delivered a list of people they wanted to thank. But Eddie Murphy saved the day when accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award.

“I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity, and peace of mind… Pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your f***g mouth.”

Murphy followed the rule of three in comedy: normal, normal, unexpected. He set up an expectation that there was an actual ‘blueprint’ for success. His next two statements sounded like real advice, which was why the third was so funny. When you want to be memorable, follow Murphy’s advice. He came. He saw. He brought the house down.
