30 Mar Bounce Back
Who hasn’t blown a pitch, failed to connect with an audience, or muffed an important presentation? But when we’re ready to get back on our feet, we need inspiration and rehearsal.
Lindsey Vonn is 40, ancient in terms of Olympian skiers. She competed from 2002 – 2019 when a knee injury forced her retirement. A year ago, Vonn had knee surgery, did extensive PT and in the recent World Cup races in Sun Valley, she won a silver medal. And it was her first medal since 2018. Vonn is now the oldest woman to have a podium finish at a World Cup.
When you feel frustrated and want to quit speaking, find a quiet place. Be reflective and walk yourself through what happened. But don’t beat yourself up. Figure out your strong and weak points/ moments, and re-imagine doing better and succeeding. Rehearse that scenario. Be your own supportive coach and talk yourself up. No matter how much it hurt, bouncing back and winning will feel so much sweeter (*).
Note: Deborah had successful knee surgery last summer (thank you Dr. Marvil), and by winter, skied intermediate runs at 12,000 feet. Grit and intention conquer fear and age every time.
