Julia Child was an unlikely celebrity. She walked away from a conservative east coast upbringing, married an unconventional man (Paul Child) and moved to Paris. She took a cooking class at Le Cordon Bleu and the rest is history. The 2021 documentary Julia on Netflix is almost as lively and brilliant as Julia herself.
Child was 6’2”, not traditionally telegenic, and warbled her dialogue. She returned to the U.S. to tout her co-authored cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Child requested a hot plate on a PBS talk show and they said “We don’t do that.” She insisted, her omelet demonstration launched her media career and was the beginning of televised cooking programs. Before Child, women were only set dressing on commercials and food advertising. After Child, other women followed as celebrity chefs!
We profess that no one was born a great speaker. Time after time, trailblazers emerge with a fearlessness and vision. They shrug off the naysayers and how “it was done before.” Regardless of their industry, they use their own gifts, often turning supposed detriments into advantages. Recognize and hone your gifts and unique voice. With determination, intention and grit, you can forge your own destiny and change the world.
