ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH

09 Aug ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH

Comments we received from last week’s tip about Tone prompted us to dig deeper. Retired orthopedic surgeon Dr. Martin Korn of Rochester, NY emailed us that “tone is critical in connecting and persuading.” His perspective comes from a career that spanned over three decades in clinical practice and academic teaching.

He’s not alone. Malcolm Gladwell cited a study in his book Blink that revealed doctors who didn’t use a “command tone” and clearly explained procedures to their patients were less likely to be sued for malpractice. Tone matters.

Eloqui trains the modules of Intention and Role. Once Intention is identified and a Role has been chosen as a filter for your words, tone follows naturally. A Role is comprised of language (including word choices) and behavior. A Trusted Advisors’ tone is warm and empathic. A Seasoned Veteran speaks confidently, sometimes with a dose of arrogance and an enjoyment of storytelling. A Motivator’s tone is charged and bright to prompt action.

When language and behavior are knit together seamlessly, you and your audience feel it. Tone that fulfills your Intention, as well as the needs of your listener(s) is one of the most powerful tools a speaker can employ. There’s no better way to be effective, memorable and persuasive.
