Make Some Noise

04 Jan Make Some Noise

We chose to watch the world celebrate New Year’s Eve on television in front of a warm fire. And wow, did they! In Switzerland, costumed boom-men swept away evil spirits, while bellringers and choruses of chanters scared them off. Similar rituals occurred in Dubai, Rio, Sydney, Mexico and Cairo. The motif was huge waves of noise from voices, bells and fireworks meant to drive away evil spirits.

Our favorite celebration for elegant and creative New Year’s celebrations was in Paris at the Arc de Triomphe. The gorgeous light-show and music captivated the elbow-to-elbow crowd. And even Parisians tolerated the noise.

Why noise? Do evil spirits have tender ears? Noise is exhilarating, excites humans and when we scream, it’s a release. Or, when the kettle drums herald the close of a symphony, audiences applaud. It made us reflect on how noise is a universal tool to conclude a play, song, or movie.

When you construct a presentation, examine its overall arc for how to design the “noisy” finale. Dig deep for a creative way to stamp your finish that will move hearts and minds. Boost your volume. Channel Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma or any Adele performance. Invest your finale with certainty and commitment to get your audience on their feet.
